From Armenia to America — an immigrant's journey to serve
Zhirayr Gumruyan was born in Armenia and grew up in a country that was still finding its footing after the fall of the Soviet Union. Opportunities were scarce, but ambition was not. From a young age, Zhirayr understood that if he wanted to build the life he envisioned, he would need to seek it out.
Before leaving Armenia, Zhirayr served two years in the Armenian Armed Forces as a Senior Sergeant, earning multiple awards for his dedication and leadership. That experience forged in him a discipline, a sense of duty, and a commitment to service that would shape everything that followed.
He came to the United States pursuing something that millions before him had chased: the opportunity to work hard, build something meaningful, and provide for a family. America was not handed to him. He earned it, one step at a time, through years of study, work, and determination.
Zhirayr became a naturalized United States citizen, a moment he describes as one of the proudest of his life. He understands the value of this country in a way that only someone who chose it can. He did not inherit his citizenship. He fought for it, studied for it, and made a deliberate choice to pledge his allegiance to the nation that gave him a chance.
The values that carried him from Armenia to America are the same values he brings to everything he does: hard work, family, gratitude, and an unshakeable faith in the American Dream.

Full-stack, 10+ years experience
5 ventures built from the ground up
Zhirayr's career has been defined by an unusual trajectory: from the research laboratory to the tech industry to the entrepreneurial arena. He began as a materials scientist, publishing peer-reviewed research on combustion synthesis. That rigorous, evidence-based approach to solving problems became the foundation for everything that followed.
He transitioned into software engineering, building complex applications at companies like Connexity and eLocal, where he honed his skills in full-stack development and large-scale systems. But Zhirayr was never content to just build for someone else. The pull of entrepreneurship led him to co-found multiple ventures, culminating in his current role as CEO of Elixion, an AI-native workspace company based in San Francisco.
Through it all, Zhirayr has been a builder, someone who sees problems, rolls up his sleeves, and creates solutions. That is the mentality he will bring to Sacramento.
View Full Professional Portfolio →Sacramento is broken. Year after year, California's leaders pass laws that make life harder for the people they claim to represent. Families are struggling under the crushing weight of a cost of living that keeps rising while wages stagnate. Crime has become a daily reality in communities that used to feel safe. Our schools are failing the children who need them most.
I have watched this happen from the perspective of a business owner, a taxpayer, a father, and an immigrant who came to this state because it represented the best of America. California was once a beacon of opportunity. Today, people and businesses are leaving at record rates, and those who stay are left wondering whether their government even cares.
As someone who has served in the military, built businesses, and created jobs, I bring real-world experience to the table. I know what it takes to meet payroll, navigate a web of regulations, and make difficult decisions with real consequences. As someone who served his country and then chose America, I understand what is at stake. I chose this country, and I refuse to watch it decline when I have the ability to stand up and fight for it.
I am not a career politician. I am an engineer, an entrepreneur, and a citizen who believes that District 40 deserves better. I am running because I believe the best way to fix a broken system is to send people into it who have actually built something in the real world.
When the Palisades fires devastated communities across Los Angeles in January 2025, Zhirayr did not wait for someone else to act. He gathered food, water, and essential supplies and headed to the Pasadena area to help families who had lost everything.
Working alongside fellow volunteers, he delivered supplies directly to people in need, spending hours on the ground at relief centers making sure displaced families had what they needed to get through the crisis.
For Zhirayr, this was not a photo opportunity. It was simply what you do when your neighbors are hurting. The experience reinforced what he already knew: when government systems fail, it is ordinary people who step up. That is the kind of leadership he wants to bring to Sacramento.
