Zhirayr Gumruyan, a military veteran, entrepreneur, engineer, and immigrant from Armenia, today officially announced his candidacy for California State Assembly District 40. Gumruyan, who serves as CEO of Elixion, an AI-native workspace company based in San Francisco, is entering the race with a message centered on economic opportunity, public safety, and educational excellence for the families of District 40.
"I came to this country with nothing but a willingness to work and a belief that America rewards those who build," Gumruyan said in his announcement. "That belief carried me from Armenia to a career in research, engineering, and entrepreneurship. But today, too many families in District 40 are being told that the American Dream is no longer available to them. I refuse to accept that. I am running because I know firsthand what this country can be when its leaders get out of the way and let people succeed."
Gumruyan's background sets him apart from the typical candidate for state office. Before coming to America, he served two years in the Armenian Armed Forces as a Senior Surgeon, earning multiple awards for his service. He then began a career as a materials scientist, publishing peer-reviewed research before transitioning into software engineering and eventually founding multiple companies. His professional journey has taken him from the military to the research laboratory to the boardroom, giving him a perspective rooted in discipline, problem-solving, accountability, and results. He is not a career politician. He is someone who has spent his life serving and building.
At the heart of Gumruyan's campaign is a simple argument: Sacramento has failed the people of California. The cost of living continues to climb while wages struggle to keep pace. Crime has eroded the sense of safety that communities once took for granted. Public schools are underperforming, leaving families with fewer options and less hope. Gumruyan believes that the state capital needs fewer politicians who have never signed the front of a paycheck and more leaders who understand what it actually takes to create jobs, grow a business, and support a family in an economy that increasingly works against working people.
As an immigrant who chose America and earned his citizenship, Gumruyan brings a unique sense of urgency to his candidacy. He did not inherit his place in this country. He worked for it, and he understands its value in a way that drives his determination to protect it. His campaign is calling on voters, volunteers, and supporters across District 40 to join the movement. Together, we can bring real leadership to Sacramento and fight for the families of District 40.
